Imagine this, it is Saigon, 29th April 1975, you are on the last Huey flight out of the city, why is that the Anti-Communist forces with their vastly superior equipment have been defeated? While the Viet Cong were equipped with relatively crude equipment, it was simple and reliable, and the epitome of this is the Kalashnikov rifle. The AK has been used since 1949 from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, and continues to be produced today; there is no single thing on this planet which has seen a similar longevity.
So why am I waffling on about guns and war?
It’s because war is the ultimate test of real world capability, the outcome is a matter life or death, and it pushes the boundaries. We too have to work in high pressure environments, whether you are a press photographer, or a working a wedding. What we want to bring to you is real world experience in photography, where things aren’t under control or perfect, and you just have the get on with it using whatever you have*.
For those of you who work, you’re already aware that sometimes photography can get a little tedious, and you already know which clients they are. However on the whole I think you’ll agree that you’re in this game because you enjoy it. So we will try our best to keep it light, and please forgive us if some of our stuff sounds a little below you, because it probably is.
Oh and we shan’t patronise you with the basics either. So if you don’t understand something please send your emails to somebody else, or just read up on it and come back later, our blog will still be here**.
* Of course, you have to be realistic too. In some situations we do expect you to have a certain level of equipment, or else it would be like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
** Except in case of Armageddon.
