...or you could just get a funny hat...

Recently, I’ve been pondering why is it that professionals swear by their constant 2.8 zooms and 1D/D3/D4 type full sized bricks, when lenses like the Canon 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS, Canon 24-105mm f4L IS, Tamron SP 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di VC USD are so capable.

They will tell you that in low light f2.8 is better, but that 1.4 on your other body trumps that by two whole stops. I honestly have never found a situation where I really needed the extra stop gained between f/2.8 and f/4, if the light is low even at 1600 you’re still scrabbling around at slow speeds. The next perplexing issue was why the hell did these photographers have flashguns attached when it was obviously unnecessary? Why would you consciously and willingly make you own life harder?

It wasn’t until I shot a few events in the Chinese community (where everyone seems to have a DSLR) that it became apparent that having a 1Ds mark II with a 70-210mm f2.8, and a flashgun makes perfect sense. I was shooting at 70mm and often with flash off, but in a crowd of cameras people will usually lock onto the biggest loudest thing there. If that doesn’t work, you can always use the modelling light on the flash, which is sure to get people looking at you.

With the DSLR becoming far more accessible, it’s more or less certain that you will be coming across a kitted up amateurs, if you can’t afford pro gear, then consider buying a much cheaper item – a funny hat. The plus side is the funny hat will never twist your arm off.
